Our company name was inspired by the idea of boxing clever – using savvy, fancy footwork and skill to defeat bigger opponents.
Especially in uncertain times, we believe that anybody can compete with the big players if they take the [have] opportunities to upskill and are exposed to new ideas. We use our experience as journalists to discover down the best speakers and tutors to give you honest insight into business and careers.
Simone is a co-founder of Clever Boxer. Until November 2014, she was head of Guardian Masterclasses and grew the business dramatically in a little over two years, expanding into Australia and corporate training markets. As a consultant and trainer she has worked with Frieze, The Idler and the iD Agency. She has been a journalist for 15 years and was previously Features Editor of Time Out, the London arts and entertainment magazine. She is also founder of Trashed, the online and in-print publication for young creative people, and she has been running workshops since 2002.
Alan is a co-founder of Clever Boxer. He has worked as a journalist, digital consultant, product owner and trainer. He oversaw the iPad edition launches of Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue in the UK, and has been working with Condé Nast International as product owner on a bespoke digital asset management system for their 11 global markets. He teaches for General Assembly and runs in-house training for public sector clients with ModernGov. He previously worked with Guardian Masterclasses on curating and delivering new course strands, including the startups and business courses, and teaching their B2B data visualisation courses. Previously he was Online Editor at Time Out, having also worked as Acting Deputy Editor and Features Editor on the magazine.
Robert is a freelance marketer. He met Simone and Alan when he accepted a year-long apprenticeship with Guardian Masterclasses as Digital Marketing Assistant. He so impressed Simone and Alan that, within a week of successfully completing his apprenticeship in March 2015, they asked him to join Clever Boxer as their first hire. Robert handles all things marketing and site-related (Robert single-handedly designed this new Clever Boxer site on Squarespace), but really specialises in digital marketing, CRM and brand reach.
Paul is responsible for Clever Boxer's logo. Paul runs Triple Double, a studio that uses design to help solve people’s problems – design that adds value. Using a collaborative approach to create the best solution for each client – whether brands, organisations or individuals – teaming up with specialists to enhance projects when needed. The studio works across a broad range of disciplines including graphic design, branding, art direction, campaigns, retail, digital, project curation and design education projects.
Sonya is the Blogmistress of Time Out London's blog (Now. Here. This.). On top of curating talks at Shoreditch House with Clever Boxer, Sonya is also a writer, and speaker – with an enviable contacts book. Since the Time Out Blog launched in 2011 she has been covering London’s coolest happenings seven days a week, in more than 10,000 posts and pieces of sharable viral content, which have taken Twitter and Facebook by storm.
Eddy is a journalist, copywriter and editor. Eddy writes for the Guardian, Shortlist and Time Out, and regularly runs talks and masterclasses on copywriting for businesses and the public for Clever Boxer and Guardian Masterclasses. Eddy is also available for corporate training.
